After almost a hundred years of brutal colonial rule, the French lost control of North Vietnam after they were defeated at Dienbienfu in 1954. Fearing a communist push to control all of Indochina the U.S. sent military advisors to help train the South Vietnamese army. This is the genesis of the Vietnam War.

This novel is the epic story of that monumental struggle and Dave Rockwood’s ten year odyssey. He has a good job, or so he thought, a beautiful wife and an infant son. Everything is perfect or so it seems. Through his work, he meets and bonds with a major in the U.S. army who has recently returned from overseas. The major tells Dave of the exciting things that are going on in Vietnam. Dave is fascinated with the major’s stories. The major tells Dave of a civilian program that is recruiting interpreters for overseas duty and will train the applicants. The major can set up an interview if Dave is interested. Dave’s job had recently taken a turn for the worse and he jumps at the chance, certain that his wife, Janette, will support him in his new career. He is accepted into the program. Janette is livid when he tells her what he has done. Because of unforeseen circumstances, it is too late for Dave to reconsider his options and must at least stay with his new job on a temporary basis.

Dave finds himself preparing to land in Saigon, his marriage in a shambles and has no idea of what he has gotten himself into. The odyssey begins. The Emerald Odyssey is the story of the Vietnam War and much more. It is a story of adventure, love, romance, intrigue, betrayal, hatred, redemption, surprises and humor. Come along on this odyssey if you are up to it. It will be a memorable experience.

From butterfly's to corporate butt kissers to steamy jungles !!!
The author got it right. He kept me locked into the world of corporate and political greed. The research was outstanding, furnishing me with detailed information about the powers that ran Vietnam during this time period.
The love stories that intertwined all the action was well placed and very heartwarming.
The book took me through emotions I did not care to re-visit however, allowed me to see the benefits of forgiveness and the power of unconditional love.
The book touched my emotions. I recommend it as a must read for all "boomers"

The Emerald Odyssey eBook Jerry Hunter Reviews

The book begins with Dave sitting on a flight bound for Saigon. As the plane prepares to land, his thoughts turn toward Janette and Brian, his wife and son. He is going through a divorce and his drawn, sickly appearance attests to that. David soon thinks about his new job, the reason he is heading to Vietnam, and soon finds himself thrust onto a military base with almost no training or idea why he was brought there specifically. I thought the premise of the story was really interesting, and I'm not usually in military tales. I think the "average Joe" protagonist who had little idea of his place helped make it more appealing to me, because I wanted to find out if he'd be successful at his new job. Dave has to learn to adapt fast or he might die in the jungles of Vietnam.

There are some prominent grammatical errors ("Whose" instead of "Who's"). The author paints a fairly vivid picture of the surroundings. I could envision the dangers of the jungles and marshy lands Dave travels through, with their harmful flora and fauna and traps around every corner. The writing wasn't anything too special, but it certainly got the job done. I liked David well enough. He isn't so far stuck in his angst over the divorce that I became annoyed, although it does serve as a big piece of his character development. He reacts to situations in a way I feel is realistic and easy to relate to. Sarge grew on me as well, as he serves as a mentor-type character to Dave early on. He's one of those gruff but likeable types. The story also fleshes things out by occasionally showing events leading up to the main story. This reveals Dave's life prior to coming to Vietnam and getting divorced, and shows why he wanted to come in the first place. All in all, I think this is a really interesting story.

Summary
Running from an unwieldy marriage and having recently switched careers, Dave Rockwood is an American language expert who finds himself in the middle of Saigon's ungodly jungle when his assignment is mistakenly switched with that of a colleague while in Vietnam. However, Dave is made to return to the field when the CIA falls short of speech specialists operating with an extraordinary unit of American marines. He questions his patriotism for his job when he witnesses an ugly side of the war and, when the chips are down, he must choose to either help the little Vietnamese villages he had been gathering information from or deny that a tragedy is unfolding before his very eyes. Lies and accusations herald the assassination of President Kennedy for Mr. Rockwood in Vietnam and it can only get worse. How can he end this odyssey and go back home to fix his marriage, because this is the one thing fueling his adventure right from the start?
Social/Historical Context
Just like President Kennedy's assassination, the Vietnam War was a tragedy the American public never saw coming until it was too late. The government had kept America's involvement in the war a secret from her people and it was only after the president's death that the full extent of the ongoing mayhem in the jungles of that small communist-leaning country was revealed. The Emerald Odyssey chronicles this fact in a fictional narrative as gripping as the war itself.
Writing Style
Told in a third voice, the story ebbs and flows, back-flashes and intermittent visualizations of the life of our protagonist's estranged wife in the United States being the order of the day. Devoid of errors and typos, this book is written in simple English, and delves into the culture of the Vietnamese people with vigor. The plot line is good as well as the narration voice. The writer equally did his research well enough and the reader completes his task with a deep sense of satisfaction.
My Thoughts
Worth reading. A good take on Vietnamese culture as well as the war Americans would love to forget. Other than that, I was a bit disappointed because I thought that the novel's title would entail a conspiracy to be unraveled or something sinister in its plot line apart from a weary fellow trying to piece together his life in another country's war. Overall, however, the ending is satisfying.

George Shadow is the author of THE LAST CONSORT.
This was a great read but it was also very true to the history of the time.

An emotional uncensored journey through the greed and corruption in wartime Vietnam, along with a tender love story and strong characters you will love and hate. Put the coffee on and settle in for a great read!
A fascinating tale well told. Follow Dave Rockwood as he discovers his own heart of darkness from the vapid city of LA in the 60s through the early history of American involvement in Vietnam and beyond. Can lost innocence be recovered? Is redemption possible? You might be surprised.
